Why are fictional shows or films so difficult to understand?

In India, I can watch episode after episode of reality TV like cooking shows and get 90% + of what is going on.

This is despite never seeing the participants before, hearing them before etc and even if I’m not familiar with the format I can still understand a lot.

Yet I’ll watch a documentary drama and I’m just so lost. The actors always seem to speak weirdly/slurred/fast/incomprehensible. I will understand only 50-85% of these depending on the context of each show.

Why are TV and films so much harder than just watching normal people talking with each other? I can’t pinpoint it. I don’t think it’s language use. I don’t think it’s familiarity. I just don’t know.

    Any clues?
